Cougar pride took on a special meaning as special education students mixed it up with middle and high schoolers for a day of education and fun during the district’s first Cougar Pride Day.

The field day type experience, was designed to provide special needs units a day of fun, education and socialization, according to GCMS social studies teacher Shane Decker.

Decker had seen a similar event while teaching last year in Hopkins County, and worked closely with Special Education Director Monica Heavrin and district Occupational Therapist Merri Beth Bratcher to create a memorable experience “solely tailored for those students.”

Students enjoyed a range of both educational and fun activities including archery, art, games and lots of interaction with middle and high school peer volunteers from the Y-Club, Beta and Art Clubs, DECA and others. “Enough can’t be said about the job the student volunteers did,” said Decker.

He also noted the special interactions between older students and their former elementary unit teachers and aides who develop longer-term relationships with students who are often in their classes over several years.

The Grayson County Master Gardeners provided a hands-on lesson, with a take-home plant as a memory of the day. Several other community partners joined in to help with the event. Special thanks go to the Grayson County Detention Center for a delicious meal, T-Shirt Express, and Wilson & Muir.

“We thought it was a good day all the way around and look forward to seeing if we can make it a mainstay,” added Decker.
