Carpentry students build raised gardensCRaised Gardens Raise Excitement at BeeHive

Raised gardens are one of the latest trends, keeping knees and backs from aching or injury. They are also a boon for those with limited mobility, such as some of the residents of BeeHive Homes, many of whom had previously enjoyed gardening.

Mary Nell Bouvier, who owns the residence along with husband John, turned to the Grayson County Technology Center’s Carpentry department for a hand in giving residents a way to resume that familiar pastime during the upcoming months.

“We were able to place the raised beds close to our building so no one has to walk far to get to their garden. Because of the design of the beds, planting, weeding, and harvesting can all be done without bending over, kneeling, or stooping,” said Bouvier.

Carpentry has been making the beds for a couple of years. They also have experience building modified beds for any number of physical needs. In total, eight beds were transported or built on site and “supervised” by a group of excited residents.

According to Bouvier, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and squash “seem to be the plants of choice for this year.” She added that one bed will be devoted solely to various kinds of herbs. “Our cook, Charlotte Hoots, will use the fresh produce and herbs for resident meals throughout the spring and summer. We are so grateful to Jeff Kiper and his carpentry class for building the beds for us.”
