HOSAGCHS HOSA Takes Top Finishes at Nationals

GCHS HOSA returned from national competition with plenty of hardware in hand. The national conference was held in Nashville, TN, with more than nine thousand competitors.

Mekenzie Ballard finished in the Top Ten in Medical Assisting. Ballard was elected to serve as KY HOSA Treasurer during the organization’s state conference held last spring.

The Medical Reserve Team (MRC) of Danielle Grapes, Haven Roof, Nathan Shelton, Carleigh Carroll, and Sarah Conder took 3rd place overall. This is the second year in a row that the GCHS HOSA MRC Team has achieved a Top 3 national finish. With the exception of third-year member Grapes, all other team members were in their first year with the project.

According to HOSA sponsor Donn Priest, local MRC coordinator Joseph Riggs was a big contributor to the group’s success. “This is the first year we have had a MRC Coordinator in our county,” she said. “I believe the reason they were so successful is that they had so many projects this year that targeted different aspects of what the MRC does.”

A key element included educating the community about the Medical Reserve Corps and its importance to Grayson County through a variety of speaking engagements and activities.

“We were able to sign up over 30 people as potential MRC volunteers. Previously Grayson County had three,” said Priest. The team will be training these volunteers to get them actively working as MRC within a few months. They plan to continue the awareness and recruitment campaign this year.

A bone marrow donation drive at the high school targeted students and teachers between the ages of 18 and 45 to donate a DNA sample for the “Be the Match” campaign. “We had a great response to that project,” said Priest.

The group led the Teal Pumpkin project at the Halloween safe spot to provide alternative treats for children with allergies, especially peanut allergies. They also continued their involvement with the successful GCMS Junior HOSA program.
