SKILLS Adds Spirit to GCHS Entry

Students from Larry Baker’s SKILLS USA Welding Chapter recently combined their talents to enhance the GCHS entrance canopy by fabricating a Cougar paw print metal sculpture for the space.

The paw, six feet in diameter, weighs nearly 200 pounds. Its 3-dimensional appearance comes from a three-layer building technique. The project took five weeks to design, fabricate, paint and install. The design can be scaled to produce different sizes for future use.

Some 20 students from the SKILLS USA welding chapter worked on the structure. The entire process involved visualizing the piece, preparing and welding the steel to precise specifications using a variety of tools and processes before sending it to New York Blower Company for powder coating.

The project is one of several the club has participated in recently that allows them to combine instructional and real-world applications.

Shown l – r are welding students Evan Williams and Brad Blanton, both sophomores; Leana Smith, a junior; and Luke Decker, also a sophomore.
