Alicia Brooks
New Leader for Lawler

A new school year always brings with it a fresh air of excitement and change. That will be especially true for Lawler Elementary this year as Alicia Brooks takes the helm as principal.

Brooks, a Las Vegas native, began her teaching and administrative career there, serving as a teacher for nine years and as an elementary assistant principal for a year and a half.

She and husband, James, had talked for years about relocating, and looked at many areas before finally settling on Kentucky. They visited in the summer 2013 and “fell in love with it,” she said, making their move official to Hardin County the following April. There, Brooks served as Assistant Principal of North Park Elementary, a preschool – kindergarten school of 700 students.

They purchased a home and mini farm in Clarkson even before she heard about the Lawler opening, and moved in just four days before learning of her selection to lead the school.

“I’m excited. Lawler has done a lot to establish success,” said Brooks, so as a first-year principal not only in a new school, but in a new town, she will focus on “getting in and learning. I will make sure that I am visible and that I listen.” She went on to say that “I can’t wait to support Lawler Elementary and continue the school’s accomplishments. I have been working hard for this moment and am so grateful to become part of a remarkable team. It is not a responsibility that I enter into lightly.”

Brooks, a self-described hard worker and person of action, wants teachers, students and parents alike to know “that they can come to me and that I’m a person they can trust. I’m a person who’s going to follow through. I won’t know everything, but I will sure work hard to find the answers.” Brooks understands that being a leader requires many skills. “It takes organization, flexibility, and communication. It takes knowledge, skills, and vision. But most of all, it takes a strong desire to make a difference.”

Brooks’ educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Nevada Las Vegas. She earned her Master’s of Science in Elementary Education, and Education Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

Her husband, James, is a retired plumber and pipefitter, soon to be cattleman and farmer. Son, Jesse, 25, is a Marine Corps veteran who served in Afghanistan. He is currently a student at the University of Louisville. Daughter Sydney, 22, is an instructional assistant with Hardin County Schools.
