Agribusiness consultant Mary Shelman speaks to GCM S8th graders
Agritech Shaping the Future of Food

Agriculture and technology combine for big business with multiple career pathways. International agribusiness consultant, Mary Shelman, recently shared those opportunities and their impact on global food markets with GCMS 8th graders.

The former Director of the Harvard Business School Agribusiness Program discussed how technology is shaping the agriculture landscape along with career opportunities and industry trends.

According to Shelman, it will be necessary “to produce as much food in the next fifty years as as we’ve ever made before.“ This will require new methods of farming and increased use of technology to feed a rapidly growing world population.

Technology is and will continue playing a large role, as scientists and farmers look to produce more with fewer natural resources. Drones, sensors, robots and artificial intelligence and machine learning will play increasingly important roles. Career opportunities from farming, to scientific research, marketing and technology will impact basic, but critical needs around the globe.

Shelman currently works as a consultant in the agribusiness industry, while maintaining a family farm in Kentucky.
