Teresa Killen lends a hand to Hunter Aymond, Emily Lush, and Clayton Killen in recycling. Recycling Project Grows Real World Skills

Teamwork, communication, responsibility – intangible, soft skills that make a real difference in the real world. GCHS Special Education teachers Brandy Weedman and Angela DeJarnette have been helping students develop those skills as they also take care of their school and the environment.

The recycling team of Chevy Lindsey, Clayton Killen, Emily Lush, and Hunter Aymond travels the halls on Friday afternoons, collecting bins and sorting them by content. They then help load up the recycling truck compartments and deliver bins back to classrooms for the next week.

The students take pride in their contribution to the school, said Weedman. The weekly rounds help build independence and grow self-confidence, as they see real results from their efforts.

Weedman added that the entire class has been focusing on service involvement this year and has performed several projects to date, including care packages to troops, and Pennies for the Pantry.
