Congratulations! Students selected for GSP and GSA this summer

GCHS will be well-represented this summer at the Governor’s Scholars and Arts programs. Nine students have been selected—the most in recent years.

Brody Cole, Jada Colley, Piper Mangan, Anneliese McCray, Stella Rogers, and Kelsie Smiley have been selected to attend GSP. Emelia Thurman and Marley Lucas were named alternates. In addition, Divya Patel was one of only 40 students statewide selected for the Governor’s School for the Arts in Visual Arts.

The GSP selection process includes a rigorous and lengthy application that showcases academics, extracurricular activities, service, honors, and awards. Community and teacher recommendations, along with a personal essay, round out the requirements. Each year, more than 2,000 applications are typically received, with only 1,020 students selected.

Students will accept or decline their invitation by May. Shortly after, they will learn which campus (Centre College, Morehead State University, or Murray State University) and five-week session they will attend, as well as their Focus Area.

Tuition, room and board, class supplies, and program activities are fully covered by the Commonwealth of Kentucky and private donors. Families are only responsible for transportation to and from campus. The experience also opens the door to numerous scholarship opportunities.

The Governor’s School for the Arts is a similar three-week program held in June on Northern Kentucky University’s campus. Divya assembled a diverse portfolio of her visual art projects, along with a self-produced video about her interest in the program.

GSA is free for accepted students and offers scholarship opportunities at nearly 30 colleges and universities. The program, which began in 1987, provides an immersive experience in areas such as Instrumental Music, Architecture & Design, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Film & Photography, Graphic Design, Musical Theatre, Visual Art, and Vocal Music
