WINTER WEATHER School Schedule Changes

Winter weather brings the possibility of school closures, delays, and/or early releases. Conditions are closely monitored, from the first threat of inclement weather through an actual event.

We do our best to provide as much lead time as possible for families to plan in the event of a school closure or schedule change.

  • If a decision can be made the night before, it will typically be announced no later than 8:30 pm.

  • If a morning call is necessary, it will be announced by 6 am, barring unforeseen circumstances.

There may be exceptions, possibly due to the late arrival or the speed of a system. Vastly different conditions across the county may also impact the timing of final decisions and their announcement.

In the days that follow a weather event, roads continue to be driven countywide to assess potential hazards that could impact our students and staff.  Just because roads are clear on main thoroughfares, does not mean they are passable on backroads and in more remote parts of the county, especially for our buses.

Cancellation options include both traditional snow days to be made up later in the school year and NTI. See the 2024-25 school year calendar for possible makeup dates.

If no announcement is made, school will be in session and on a regular schedule.

Snow Day or NTI?

The decision to call for a traditional snow day or an NTI day is based on many different factors. Most importantly, it centers on doing what we believe to be in the best interests of our kids, which is providing as many face-to-face days of instruction as possible. In-person instruction is more meaningful and effective as students can interact with their teachers, staff, and classmates. Make-up days provide that opportunity.

For the 2024-25 school year, Grayson County Schools will first use five snow days which will be make-up days, and then reevaluate our plans for NTI moving forward, if needed.

Additional information is in the FAQ below. Understand that each weather or other school-cancellation event is unique and not all statements will apply to a specific event.
