A record 285 GCHS students who have already earned career pathway certifications also earned their way to this morning’s annual Industry Certification Breakfast hosted in partnership with the Grayson County Chamber of Commerce.
According to GC Technology Center Director Matt Hayes, students with industry certifications have a higher GPA, graduate at a rate of 98% compared to those who don’t, and make 7% more in lifetime earnings.
With a record 220 industry certifications earned this year, these students are ready for their next step. The Tech Center also recently received end-of-program assessment results that can translate into college credit for students who pass them. This year, the school posted a 67% pass rate compared to 52% statewide. That equals more than 300 hours of college credit and nearly $61,000 in tuition savings based on KCTCS rates.
Guest speaker and GCHS alum Patty Dunaway shared from her career as a civil engineer in both the public and private sectors. She encouraged students to carry three qualities with them no matter what path they pursue: a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and the courage to be bold. She pointed to a recent work trip to Africa, where she helped build a pedestrian bridge, as an example of embracing opportunities and stepping outside her comfort zone.
She encouraged students to take opportunities when they come, volunteer, and use what they’ve learned to make a difference in the lives of others.
“You do make a difference,” she said. “The things you’ve learned are going to make a difference in your life and in the lives of people around you. Take every opportunity to work hard, be positive, and be bold.
