Todd Johnston Interim Principal Caneyville Elementary

Todd Johnston has been selected as interim principal of Caneyville Elementary School for the 2026-27 school year. The announcement follows Josh Basham's move to Grayson County Middle School as assistant principal.

Johnston retired from Grayson County Schools in 2021 after 29 years. During his career, he served as assistant principal and principal at Grayson County High School before retiring as Director of Districtwide Programs.

He returned to education in January 2022 as GCHS interim assistant principal under then-principal Lacy Cox. Johnston most recently served as principal of Saint Paul Catholic School for four years.

In addition to his teaching and administrative experience, Johnston served as head boys basketball coach, leading both the 2001 and 2009 teams to the state Sweet 16. He also coached the Lady Cougars for two seasons post-retirement. He says those experiences continue to shape his leadership style

"The leadership and guidance you provide in coaching a team is very similar to coaching a faculty," he said.

Johnston also says helping students succeed has always been his greatest motivation.

"For me, the best part of education has been seeing students succeed and make a positive impact," he said. "It's why we go into this profession, and it's what continues to drive me."

"We're thrilled to have Mr. Johnston leading Caneyville this year," said Superintendent Doug Robinson. "His experience as a teacher, coach, school and district leader makes him an excellent fit, and I know he'll build on the great work already happening there."

Johnston looks forward to the new school year at Caneyville and getting to know its students, families, and staff.

"I've heard nothing but great things about Caneyville, and I'm excited to join the Flash family and continue the great work Mr. Basham has done,” he said. “Working together, we’re going to have a great school year.”
