Retired Grayson County High School teacher Lana Green-Willis will soon add a new honor to her more than three-decade career — induction into the Governor Louie B. Nunn Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame at Western Kentucky University.
Willis taught social studies at GCHS from 1991 until her retirement in 2023. Former students remember her ability to connect with them and encourage them both academically and personally. They also credit her with challenging them to think for themselves, with curiosity and an open mind.
Her impact also reached beyond the classroom. Whether leading the social studies department, mentoring new teachers or sponsoring student activities, Willis was always a positive presence throughout GCHS. She is regarded as a respected mentor and natural leader who continually worked to improve her own teaching while helping those around her do the same.
Her commitment to GCHS continued even after retirement as Willis played an active role in the school’s 50th anniversary celebration, helping preserve and share its history and reconnect former students and staff.
“Mrs. Lana Green-Willis embodies the very best of the teaching profession, leaving a legacy of creativity, mentorship and kindness that has shaped Grayson County High School for generations,” said GCHS teacher Adam Spinks, who submitted her nomination along with fellow educators Melinda Baum, Chancellor Dennison and Gretchen VanMeter.
Willis will be formally inducted into the Kentucky Teacher Hall of Fame on Dec. 4, and full biographies for all inductees will be released at that time.
