Mr. Zayne Priddy's class learned about physical and chemical erosion, using sugar cubes, mints, rocks, and water. Spoiler alert: it took vinegar to produce the chemical erosion. Excellent young teacher and great pupils! #GCMSOpportunity @gcboe

Use reality TV as a jumping off point for reading. If your teen loves cooking shows, pull out the cookbooks and have a family chili cook-off. If survival shows are more their speed, they might read survival guides and learn to recognize poisonous plants or navigate by the stars.

Talk to your teen about unhealthy behaviors before you see signs of them. Let them know your thoughts & feelings about vaping, illegal drugs & alcohol. Passing on your values will give them a moral compass to follow if they're faced with peer pressure. #GCMSOpportunity

Use this thinking activity to spark a family discussion. Pick an invention, like the car, and discuss what the world would be like if it had never been invented. (There would be no gas stations or car racing.) How many things can you think of that would be different?

This game will help family members get to know each other better. Take turns being the “quiz master” and asking five questions about yourself. (“Who is my hero?” “What’s my favorite fruit?”) After everyone writes their guesses, the quiz master gives the correct answers.

Many kids this age stop reading for pleasure. Your child will be more likely to keep up the habit if you let them decide what to read and respect their choices. Any reading material, from comic books to short stories to poetry, will help to keep their skills sharp.

Taking notes helps your teen understand and remember what they learn. If they miss something the teacher says, they can leave a blank line in their notes and ask after class. If they're learning remotely, they might record lectures to play back and check against their notes.

Teens may be targets of identity theft because most haven’t established a credit history. To protect your child, remind them to set social media accounts to private. They should also create strong passwords that they change frequently and never share with anyone except parents.

Ask your teen to reflect on remote learning & make tweaks if needed. If they struggle to keep track of work, they could list each day’s assignments on a white board, using a different color for each class. Then they could check them off one-by-one upon completion.
